What’s Happening Nearby - April 2023

Spring is here and we’re enjoying the gardens and grounds coming to life with longer days and warmer temperatures. It’s a great time to visit us here at The Elvetham and explore our 35 rolling acres for yourself, perhaps take Afternoon Tea overlooking the grounds, and relax in our beautiful part of England. If you are here for Easter, make sure you bring the kids to our very own Easter Egg Hunt, which takes place in the grounds daily, 4th - 8th April. Should you wish to venture further afield during your stay, here’s a few suggestions for the month of April.

If you are travelling with children Wellington Country Park should be on your itinerary. This award-winning destination makes a great family day out and is easily accessible from The Elvetham. Perfect for children up to 8 years old, there’s always lots to see and do. Here’s some specific events for this month:

April 1st-16th - Eggs’travaganza - Come and get crafty with this fun crafting activity. With singing, dancing and lots of fun join Canary Mary and her friends Custard the Chick, Lolli the Lamb and The Easter Bunny himself!

2. April 9th - Mega Egg Hunt - Can you help to track down the Mega Eggs the Easter Bunny has hidden around the Park? Solve the clues and find the missing eggs hidden around the Park.

Beautiful Hartley Wintney is definitely worthy of a visit. A classic English village, with a history almost as old as The Elvetham, Hartley Wintney has been voted Britain’s best place to live on many occasions. Be sure to visit St. Mary's Church, which dates back to the 13th century and features stunning architecture and beautiful stained glass windows, and maybe enjoy a pint or two at one of the village pubs, such as The Cricketers, or The Phoenix Inn. It’s also enjoyable to take a stroll on the Commons, a pleasant spot to lookout for some of the local wildlife.

Victoria Hall in the village is home to lots of different events throughout the year, including some live streaming of theatre, opera and more. Here’s some of this month’s highlights:

April 12th - ROH Ballet Live: Cinderella -Royal Ballet Founder Choreographer Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella celebrates its 75th anniversary this Season. A new production of the much-loved Royal Ballet fairytale classic, live streamed on the big screen.                                                                                                              

April 19th - Movie Night: Operation Mincemeat - It’s 1943. The Allies are determined to break Hitler’s grip on occupied Europe, and plan to launch an all-out assault on Sicily; but they face an impossible challenge - how to protect the invasion force from potential annihilation.                                      

April 26th - NT Live Encore: Othello - Live streaming on the screen of an extraordinary new production of Shakespeare’s most enduring tragedy, directed by Clint Dyer with a cast that includes Giles Terera (Hamilton), Rosy McEwean (The Alienist) and Paul Hilton (The Inheritance).

And lastly, how about a visit to world famous romantic novelist Jane Austen’s house? 

Just a short drive from The Elvetham is the Jane Austen House Museum, where visitors can learn about the life and works of the famous author. Situated in the village of Chawton, this inspiring Hampshire cottage was Jane Austen’s home and the birthplace of her six beloved novels. Today it is a charming independent museum celebrating her life, works and legacy.
